[edit]First attested as Kruisdorp in 1867. Compound of hoofd (“head-, chief”) and dorp (“village”). Originally named Kruisdorp after the village's central location in the Haarlemmermeer. The settlement was renamed in 1868 as it became the chief settlement of the polder.
