Etymology[edit]

Attested as hordijk in 1446. Compound of the toponym Hordijk (potentially derived from a compound of Middle Dutch horn (corner, sharp bend) and dyc (levee) or, alternatively, from *hordendijk (levee reinforced with osier screens)) and veld (field). Hordijk was an independent hamlet before being absorbed by Rotterdam.
