Ancient Greek ῠ̔́δᾰτος, ῠ̔́δωρ n (húdatos, húdōr, water) +‎ Ancient Greek φῠ́λᾰξ m (phúlax, guard, sentry). Ancient Greek φῠ́λᾰξ (phúlax) is commonly used in names of genera of northern caddisflies.
