Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly from Iazyges, the Roman name of an ancient Sarmatian tribe that once lived in the area, or from a tribe of Alans known as the Jassi. Other proposals include ieși, the Romanian word for "to exit", as the city was an important trade node in the region.
