Inter Cert (plural Inter Certs)

  1. (Ireland, slang) Clipping of Intermediate Certificate.

      The majority of pupils in both secondary and vocational schools left after the Inter Cert. An Inter Cert was enough to secure a job in the Civil Service. Those who remained until the Leaving Cert were a truly privileged minority.
  2. (Ireland, slang, dated) A student in their 3rd or 4th year of secondary school.

In almost every register this term is preferred over the full term 'Intermediate Certificate'.
