English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Diminutive of James.

Pronunciation[edit]

Proper noun[edit]

Jimmer

  1. (North Wisconsin, Yooper) Alternative form of James, usually a diminutive, but also occasionally a given name.
    • 2001, Escanaba in da Moonlight:
You see, Da Jimmer has been to outer space and he’s different. Very different.

Usage notes[edit]

An odd quality of this name is that it can often take the definite article the (da in Yooper dialects), unlike most English names; i.e., instead of "Go tell Jimmer to mow the lawn," "Go tell the (da) Jimmer to mow the lawn."
