Etymology

From Tamil கண்டி (kaṇṭi), possibly further from Sinhalese [Term?], ultimately from Sanskrit खण्ड (khaṇḍa); or possibly from Portuguese Candea, Sinhalese කන්ද උඩරට (kanda uḍaraṭa, “land on the mountain”), ultimately from Sinhalese කන්ද (kanda, “a mountain”).
