From Tamil கண்டி (kaṇṭi), possibly further from Sinhalese [Term?], ultimately from Sanskrit खण्ड (khaṇḍa); or possibly from Portuguese Candea, Sinhalese කන්ද උඩරට (kanda uḍaraṭa, land on the mountain), ultimately from Sinhalese කන්ද (kanda, a mountain).
