From earlier krompet (alternative forms are present in multiple neighbouring Limburgish and Central Franconian dialects), probably from Walloon crompîre, crompire, itself likely from Limburgish grompeer or Luxembourgish Gromper. Equivalent to Graunt (ground) +‎ Péër (pear).
