[edit]From a medieval Karelian spoken form of the Russian given name Прокопий (Prokopij), originally as an anthroponym.[1] The town could have been named after this through a family name by early settlers, or used by the owners of hunting grounds once located in the same region. First attested in 1549 as Coopianiemi (modern spelling Kuopionniemi, the original name of the peninsula that the city was founded on).[2]
