From a species name, Viburnum lantana (a somewhat visually similar but distantly related plant), the epithet thought to derive from Late Latin [Term?]. While further etymology is uncertain, it may derive from Ancient Greek λᾰνθᾰ́νω (lanthánō, to do (something) without notice or without being noticed; to forget).
