Adaptation of Old French Louis, Looïs, Luis, from Latin Ludovīcus, from Old High German *Hlūtwīg or Frankish *Hlōdowig, from Proto-Germanic *hlūdaz (loud, famous) + *wīgą (battle). Doublet of Ludovico, Clóvis, and Aloísio.
