[edit]From Old Polish Lwów, from Old East Slavic Львовъ (Lĭvovŭ), from Львъ (Lĭvŭ, “Leo”), named after Leo I of Galicia, a 13th century king of Ruthenia and son of the founder of the city, Daniel of Galicia. By surface analysis, Lew + -ów.
