Etymology
Shortened from Matjeshering, which is borrowed from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch maatjesharing, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch medykenshering, literally “maiden herring”, formed from the cognates of German Mädchen (“girl”) and Hering (“herring”). The word was borrowed into several European languages, though the common term in contemporary Dutch is nieuwe haring (“new herring”).
