From Phoenician 𐤌𐤋𐤒𐤓𐤕 (mlqrt), probably from 𐤌𐤋𐤊 (mlk, king) + 𐤒𐤓𐤕 (qrt, city) (compare Hebrew קרת (qeret)), literally meaning "king of the city".
