Ancient Greek μέροψ (mérops), μέροπος (méropos, “bee-eater”); the Greek sense evolved from μέροψ (mérops, “endowed with speech”), as it was used in poetry to describe articulated people who "divided voices," from μέρος (méros, “portion”) + ὄψ (óps, “voice”).
