Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German morgan (morning). Akin to German Morgen, Dutch morgen, English morn. The letter -g-, when following -r-, is often pronounced /j/ in Luxembourgish.

It is conceivable that the use as a greeting was influenced or re-enforced by (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch mooi (nice, beautiful) in a phrase such as “Mooie[n] dag!” (“Good day!”). Such an influence seems less likely, however.
