Etymology[edit]

First attested as bernardeskercha in 1094. Compound of noord (north-), the toponym Schoorl and Old Dutch walt (marsh forest, swamp forest). The settlement was initially called Bernardeskercha, a compound of Bernard (a personal name) and kirika (church). The element noord was added to distinguish the settlement from Zuid-Scharwoude.
