Etymology

Irregular (syncopic) compound of the Ancient Greek νῶτον (nôton, back) +‎ τρόπις (trópis, keel) ≈ “keeled back”, so named on account of its central dorsal ridge (carination). *Nototropis would be the analogical spelling.
