From Proto-Indo-European *h₃réǵeti (to be straightening), the thematic root verb of the root Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (to straighten). Cognates with Latin rego (I rule) and Sanskrit राजति (rā́jati, to direct; to steer; to rule).
