Either from Proto-Indo-European *bʰews- (“dross, sediment”) or r-Turkic pora ("a grey kvas-like drink"). Alternatively reconstructed by Kroonen as *beurą, a dissimilation of earlier *breurą, derived from *brewwaną (“to brew”).
