From *dauganą (to conceal, darken) + adjective suffix *-laz ((deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German tougilen "to hide"), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰerg- (dim, dull), by Pokorny derived from IE *dʰeu (to blow, dissipate, fly about like dust), whence also deaf, down, dust.
