From earlier *pémpe, with an irregular consonant change from Proto-Indo-European *pénkʷe, perhaps influenced by the initial *p (as also seen in Gaulish pempe (< Proto-Celtic *kʷenkʷe) and Oscan/Umbrian 𐌐𐌖𐌌𐌐𐌄 (pumpe) (< Proto-Italic *kʷenkʷe)) .
