From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dabras, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰh₂bʰ-ró-s, from *dʰh₂ebʰ- (to fashion, fit). Morphologically formed as *dobъ +‎ *-rъ.

Cognate with Latin faber.
