Etymology

Of uncertain origin. Found only in South Slavic. Reconstructed as *dolka since Proto-Slavic *dl usually gets contracted to *l in South Slavic. Possibly related to dial. Lithuanian dėlka (string, cord (of fishing rood)).

Possibly from the same root as Proto-Slavic *dolnь (palm (of hand)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (to split, to divide). Comparable with Sanskrit दल (dala, leaf) (from the primary meaning division, splitting, half).

Noun

*dòlka f[2]

  1. strand of hair
  2. fur
    Synonyms: *kozina, *sьrstь
