Etymology

Most likely formed from the 0-grade of Pre-Slavic *kerti (to peck, to cut, to burrow) +‎ *-ъtъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut off, to turn). If correct, then cognates include Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (to decorate, to peck), Lithuanian kráuti (to pile), Latvian kraũt (to load, to pile).
