Etymology

Probably a contamination of an earlier *pečětь (“brand”), formed as *pekti (“to bake, to cook”) + *-ětь, under the influence of a Oghur term (per BER) surviving as Chuvash пичет (pič̬et, “seal, cachet”) and Georgian ბეჭედი (beč̣edi, “ring, seal”).
