From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stāw-, from Proto-Indo-European *sth₂-ēw-, from *steh₂-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *stōwijaną (to stow) and akin to Latvian stãvêt (to stand), Lithuanian stovė́ti (to stand)[1].
