[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *strujas. Cognate with Lithuanian strùjus (“uncle, old man”).
Vasmer says that it can be from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (cf. Latin patruus). Morphologically ptr->ttr->str + Proto-Balto-Slavic *-jas.
