Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *strujas, from Proto-Indo-European *struyós, from *stru- + *-yós. Cognate with Lithuanian strùjus (uncle, old man), Irish sruith (wise man, sage).

Vasmer says that it can be from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (cf. Latin patruus). Morphologically ptr->ttr->str + Proto-Balto-Slavic *-jas.
