Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *waitjāˀtei. Equivalent to *větiti +‎ *-ati, from *větъ +‎ *-iti. Cognate with Old Prussian waitiāt (to say). Connections outside of Balto-Slavic unclear.
