Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *nan(n)-eh₂- (mother), possibly a Lallwort. Closely related to Messapic ana, cognate to Ancient Greek νάννη (nánnē, aunt, mother), Welsh nain (grandmother), Sanskrit नना (nanā́, mother), Persian ننه (nane, mother, grandmother), Ukrainian неня (nenja, mother).
