Etymology

• Proto-Austroasiatic: *priəl (Sidwell, 2024, #AA025)

Three branches (Khmuic, Monic, Vietic) show *-l-r, other branches show *-r-l. Both Shorto (2006) and Sidwell (2024) consider the forms with *-r-l to be primary, with the three aforementioned branches undergoing metathesis.
