From Proto-Indo-European *ǵemH-t-os (son-in-law), from *ǵemH- (to form a relationship; to marry), or else from *ǵénh₁-to-s (relative), from *ǵenh₁- (to give birth) (the two roots appear to have been confused within Balto-Slavic).
