Proto-Celtic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Sometimes said to be from *knyo-, from Proto-Indo-European *kn̥-i-, from *ken- (to begin, arise),[1] but this leaves a wide semantic gap. It could instead be from a non-Indo-European substrate language.
