Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown.

Noun

[edit]

*taltë-

  1. storage place

Reconstruction notes

[edit]

Reconstruction as a noun is theoretical; only adverbs from inflected forms are found in descendants, especially the adessive singular (*taldëlla, meaning "in storage, safe"). While some Finnish dictionaries purport to have the basic noun, they are likely later back-formations.

Descendants

[edit]
  • Estonian: tallel
  • Finnish: tallella, tallessa, tallettaa, (dialectal, archaic) talteva
  • Ingrian: tallel
