Etymology[edit]
Uncertain, either from:
- Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ḱ- (“secure, attach, strengthen”), for a similar semantic development see Lithuanian puõsti (“to decorate, make pretty”).
- Or from Proto-Indo-European *peḱ- (“joyful, pretty”), closely related to the strong verb *fehaną.
