[edit]Thought to be from Proto-Indo-European *gʷh₃u-(w)ŕ̥s-ēn (“bull”), from *gʷoh₃ws (“cow”) + *wérsēn (“male animal”), cognate with Sanskrit गोवृष (govṛṣa, “bull”), Proto-Tocharian *kauwärṣän (“bull”).
