Thought to be from Proto-Indo-European *gʷh₃u-(w)ŕ̥s-ēn (bull), from *gʷoh₃ws (cow) +‎ *wérsēn (male animal), cognate with Sanskrit गोवृष (govṛṣa, bull), Proto-Tocharian *kauwärṣän (bull).
