Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *loystos, from the root *leys- (“to track, pursue; track, furrow, trace, trail”) (see there for cognates).[1] Along with *laistiz, has been often compared to Ancient Greek λοῖσθος (loîsthos, “left behind, last, utmost”), but this etymology for the Greek word has no formal explanation.[2]
This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
