[edit]From *a- (“not, un”) + *grúH (“pregnant”) (compare Sogdian [script needed] (γrʾnh /γrān/, “heavy, pregnant”) from the same root), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷrúh₂, perhaps metathesized from earlier *gʷr̥h₂úh₂,[1] from *gʷr̥h₂ús (“heavy”) + *-uh₂ (feminizing suffix).[2]
