Etymology[edit]

From *a- (not, un) +‎ *grúH (pregnant) (compare Sogdian [script needed] (γrʾnh /⁠γrān⁠/, heavy, pregnant) from the same root), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷrúh₂, perhaps metathesized from earlier *gʷr̥h₂úh₂,[1] from *gʷr̥h₂ús (heavy) +‎ *-uh₂ (feminizing suffix).[2]
