Etymology[edit]

From earlier *xerjō (to differentiate it from a later form *herjō if the shift */x/ > */h/ in the Italic languages already happened during late Proto-Italic), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰr̥-yé-ti, from *ǵʰer- (to yearn for).
