Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *kʷu- (“where”). Delabialization is expected before *u, but Osco-Umbrian reflexes indicate restoration of the labiovelar.

Reconstruction notes[edit]
Whether the medial consonant was *ð or *β cannot be determined from the daughter languages alone, since all of them merge *ð and *β in this context. External comparison is required to guess which one.
- Favouring *ð are Sanskrit कुह (kuha, “where”) and Proto-Slavic *kъde (“where”). De Vaan endorses this option.[1]
- Favouring *β would be Hittite ku-wa-pi (< *kʷobʰí).
