Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əpat, from Proto-Austronesian *Səpat. The nasal insertion after the schwa and before the voiceless plosive was regular, compare *hənti (“to stop, end”) (from *qəti) and *kəntut (“to fart”) (from *qətut).
