From Proto-Afroasiatic *ʔanāku. Compare Egyptian jnk and Proto-Berber *ənăkkʷ.

A reduced form *ʔana appears to have coexisted with *ʔanāku in West Semitic (if not earlier), but most descendants only have a reflex of one of the two forms.
