Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *-ēˀjas, derived from stative/essive verb stems Proto-Slavic *-ěti + *-ъ.

Cognate with Latvian -ējs, Lithuanian -ėjas.[1]

Suffix[edit]

*-ějь m

  1. Deverbal from stative verbs inflecting in *-ěti. Similar in sense to -er, -ant:
    *zъlodějь (evil-doer)*zъlъ (bad, evil) + *děti (to do)
  2. Deverbal from essive verbs inflecting in *-jati. Similar in sense to -er, -ant:
    *sъlučajь (occasion)*sъlučati (to happen)
