[edit]Derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lewǵ- (“to slide”). Compare Latvian lužas (“hunting ski”), Lithuanian šliū̃žės pl (“sledges or carriages for carrying heavy loads”), Dutch sluiken (“to smuggle”).
