Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Synchronically, probably post-verbal from the inchoative *pleskati. Further origin: either onomatopoeic, coined on Balto-Slavic soil, or derived from Proto-Indo-European *plek- (to hit, to strike; to flatten) + *-skъ. Related to Lithuanian pleškė́ti (to knock), Latvian plekšêt (to trample, to knock).

Forms a family of variants/analogous onomatopoeia with Proto-Slavic *plěskъ, *pliskъ/*pliščь, *pľuskъ, *plaskъ.
