Etymology

From earlier *skrebtì, of Proto-Balto-Slavic origin. Cognate with Latvian skrabt (“to scrape, to comb”), Lithuanian skrebė́ti (“to rasp (of noise)”).

Further origin apparently from Proto-Indo-European *skrebʰ-, probably related via schwebeablaut to *(s)kerbʰ- whence Proto-Slavic *ščьrbati (“to chip, to splinter”). Compare also Proto-Germanic *skrepaną (“to scrape”), *skrubbōną (“to scrub”).
