Proto-Slavic[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Synonym to today’s standard Lithuanian aukšlė̃ and Latvian aûsleja, also auslēja, auslejs. The formal discrepancy may be the effect of parallel borrowing from a substrate, after having shared the name with a similar fish, perhaps *klenь, *klěnь, but this looks like the same word.

Noun[edit]

*uklěja f

  1. bleak (a leuciscine fish)
