Etymology[edit]

From a Germanic language, most likely Gothic 𐌿𐌻𐌱𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌿𐍃 (ulbandus). Anlaut *velь- instead of more precise **vъl- probably due to contamination with *velьjь.
