From Proto-Germanic *gīdaz (“greed, desire”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeydʰ-o-, from *gʰeydʰ- (“to yearn for”); cognate with Lithuanian gei̇̃sti (“to desire, crave”).^[1]^[2]
